National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia.
Marian McQuade

She was born in West Virginia in 1917
A young girl growing up with aspirations and dreams
She believed in helping others and would stand up for their cause
Her power of persuasion was an inspiration to us all

She was always optimistic and in 1973
A housewife with a vision would go down in history
Compassionate and caring for our nation’s elderly
She taught us about living, having pride, and dignity

West Virginia was the first state to support her views and say
Let’s honor Grandma and Grandpa in a very special way
Let’s thank them for their wisdom and the vital roles they play
Let’s make May 27th our State’s Grandparents Day

She campaigned for the lonely that lived in nursing homes
She encouraged us to visit and call them on the phone
She was driven by her passion and in 1978
A bill was signed by the President of the United States

Now we celebrate Grandparents Day in September every year
Giving National Recognition to the ones that we hold dear
As we laugh, reminiscence, and honor them today
Let’s remember how it all began with Marian McQuade
