| History of National Grandparents Day
National Grandparents Day began with the compassion of Marian McQuade, who believed in recognizing the vital role of grandparents. This West Virginian housewife encouraged Americans to value the knowledge and integrity that grandparents possess. She called upon the help of political authorities, church leaders, and civic organizations to gather support for the cause. West Virginia’s Governor, Arch Moore, announced the state’s first Grandparents Day in 1973. McQuade, along with her supporters, continued to campaign for this special day by corresponding with media consultants and government representatives from each state. After the approval of the United States Congress in 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation declaring Grandparents Day a National Holiday. Grandparents Day is celebrated annually on the first Sunday after Labor Day. September was selected to symbolize the “autumn years” of life. The official song, “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa,” captures the true meaning of the holiday. The act of remembrance signified by the Forget-Me-Not makes it the perfect flower for Grandparents Day. The observance of this holiday has gained popularity throughout the years and continues to grow stronger. |

| Marian McQuade
She was born in West Virginia in 1917 A young girl growing up with aspirations and dreams She believed in helping others and would stand up for their cause Her power of persuasion was an inspiration to us all She was always optimistic and in 1973 A housewife with a vision would go down in history Compassionate and caring for our nation’s elderly She taught us about living, having pride, and dignity West Virginia was the first state to support her views and say Let’s honor Grandma and Grandpa in a very special way Let’s thank them for their wisdom and the vital roles they play Let’s make May 27th our State’s Grandparents Day She campaigned for the lonely that lived in nursing homes She encouraged us to visit and call them on the phone She was driven by her passion and in 1978 A bill was signed by the President of the United States Now we celebrate Grandparents Day in September every year Giving National Recognition to the ones that we hold dear As we laugh, reminiscence, and honor them today Let’s remember how it all began with Marian McQuade Words and music by Johnny Prill Johnny Prill Music, BMI © 2008 Click here to listen to or download Johnny’s Tribute to Marian McQuade. |
